Animal Crew Leader

Shelby is the Leader of the CooperRiis Animal Crew, helping residents connect with the animals and learn about all that it takes to care for them, as part of their recovery journey.

I’ve seen residents, quiet and withdrawn, light up in the presence of an animal. Often, it’s easier to open up to animals than to people, and those bonds can spark comfort, healing, and growth. Whether with animals, people, or nature, these connections open the door to mental health recovery and well-being.

Shelby did not originally set out to work in mental health. However, she quickly realized that caring for animals is deeply connected to caring for people – the impact animals have on others can truly be profound.

Before joining CooperRiis, Shelby worked in the ICU/ER department at a state veterinary school and then served as a research assistant, developing AIDS vaccines and gaining experience working intimately with primates.

Outside of work, Shelby lives on a farm, enjoys foraging and identifying plants, and has an interest in botanical dyes.
