Progress pride flag (combo gay pride and trans flag) representing LGBTQ Mental Health Residential Treatment at CooperRiis

Our therapeutic farm in Mill Spring, NC and our residential program in Asheville offer LGBTQ mental health residential treatment that is safe, affirming, and whole-person-centered. We believe care that affirms the full and true self is central to recovery, and this principle is at the core of what makes our recovery model so highly effective. That is to say, no one can be expected to put aside any part of the self and heal, and research shows this to be true. Mental and emotional health arise from all parts being present and integrated.

Any member of a historically marginalized group has valid concerns when considering residential treatment. Will I be seen for who I am? Will I be safe here? Many gay and transgender people have had mixed or openly harmful experiences in healthcare, such as being othered, misgendered, expected to educate providers, or tolerated but not accepted. Some have even endured cruel conversion attempts. In most cases, these experiences have only added trauma and worsened mental health.

At CooperRiis, our approach is simple: your identity is never the problem. It’s part of your story, your strengths, and indeed your full self. And it’s a valued part of the larger community we build together. We’re here to create an environment where you can settle in, breathe, and focus on healing.

What is LGBTQ Affirming Therapy?

LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is mental health treatment that actively respects, validates, and supports a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and lived experience. This can look different with different providers, but in CooperRiis’ LGBTQ mental health residential treatment, residents can expect:

  • Safety and respect as non-negotiables.
  • Zero tolerance for harassment; acknowledgement and remediation set into action immediately.
  • Clear processes for addressing concerns, including microaggressions or misgendering.
  • Comfortable and private individual rooms across all programs, plus gender-inclusive bathrooms.
  • Clinicians who are trained in LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed approaches, and who access ongoing education in these areas.
  • An understanding of minority stress and how it shapes mental health needs.
  • Identity-affirming language everyday, and in documentation and record-keeping.
  • An environment where you don’t have to “fit in” by being less yourself.
  • Recognition that family conflict, religious injury, and other compounded traumas may be part of the bigger picture.
  • Respect for, and validation of, chosen family relationships.

Every person’s experience of queerness intersects with other parts of their identity, for example: race, disability, age, spirituality, neurodiversity, and socioeconomic background. Affirming care acknowledges and addresses each relevant intersection and makes room for each person to do the deeper work of recovery. We have found that when residents feel seen and understood, they can turn their attention towards healing and creating the future they want for themselves.

Does CooperRiis Operate Dedicated LQBTQ Mental Health Centers?

Our programs aren’t specifically LGBTQ mental health centers. These do exist and may be the right fit for some folx. (We care more about each person finding the right fit than anything else.) Our approach is a broader, community-centered one, focused on helping every participant bring their true self forth within a diverse community.

We all thrive better when we don’t have to code-switch, manage others’ reactions, or pretend a part of ourselves doesn’t exist, whether we’re in a like-minded group or not. This kind of belonging is a form of medicine, and we cultivate it at CooperRiis through community, purpose, and connection. Here, everyone is part of the fabric of daily life, including shared meals, group therapy, farm work, creative expression, and evening downtime.

Who Are Your Residential Programs For?

Our approach is a strong fit for people who want affirming care within a mixed community, and the chance to practice being themselves in daily life.

Residents arrive at CooperRiis with a variety of diagnoses, like schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, or trauma-related conditions. From here, LGBTQIA+ residents typically find, once they settle in, that the environment also gives them room to navigate identity questions without pressure, build or rebuild confidence, and heal from relationships or settings that haven’t been safe in the past. This combination of clinical support and personal unfolding is often where the most meaningful recovery happens.

LGBTQ Mental Health FAQs

How do mental health disparities manifest among LGBTQ youth?

LGBTQ youth experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, and suicidal thoughts than their heterosexual and cisgender peers. These disparities aren’t connected to the identity itself, but from the external stressors surrounding it, such as family rejection, bullying, discrimination, and ongoing pressure to hide who they are. When these young people have access to LGBTQ affirming therapy, supportive families, and safe communities, their mental health outcomes improve significantly.

What percentage of LGBTQ people experience mental health challenges?

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ adults experience mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD at higher rates than the general population. For example, LGBTQ people are two to three times more likely to report anxiety or depression, and transgender individuals face elevated rates of trauma exposure. These differences reflect minority stress, and they’re directly related to the disparities we see in youth, which can be mitigated through supportive and affirming parenting and school environments. Similarly, in adulthood, supportive and affirming mental health care and safe community environments significantly reduce risk and improve long-term outcomes.

Our Promises for LGBTQ Mental Health Residential Treatment

Choosing a residential program is a vulnerable decision for any person, and especially so for anyone who has already navigated far too many unsafe or unwelcoming systems. Our commitment in providing LGBTQ mental health residential treatment is simple: identity-affirming care isn’t an optional layer. It’s built into who we hire, how we train, and the community we cultivate in our programs.

We will never pathologize or diminish your identity. In daily life here, residents experience what it’s like to be fully themselves while also receiving strong clinical support. That combination of safety and belonging is a big part of what allows the deeper work of healing to take root.
