Sharon Leigh Young, Ph.D
Clinical Director

“Dr. Sharon” guides the implementation of the CooperRiis Enhanced Recovery Program, which helps to move residents toward fulfilled and functional lives. Sharon and her fellow therapists, Mary Schweder and Joe Korzelius, provide one hour of individual psychotherapy to each resident weekly and also facilitate group therapy. Each assists residents with establishing and achieving individualized goals across seven domains as they traverse the three phases of recovery.

Dr. Sharon also guides the work of Addictions Counselor Stan Bayne, nursing services, the consulting relationship with Dr. Kallenbach, the clinical aspects of lodge advising, residents’ transition to services in the CooperRiis Graduate Program as well as the therapy services offered to graduates. She is in charge of staff training and oversees the staff network of Qualified Mental Health Professionals who work for CooperRiis.

Dr. Sharon obtained her doctorate from the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Toledo, Ohio.  The Enhanced Recovery Model used at CooperRiis is based on Dr. Young’s extensive graduate work, which is nationally recognized.  Prior to coming to CooperRiis, Sharon worked as a clinical psychologist for Skyland Behavioral Health Association, Pathways Area Authority Program and Broughton Hospital, which are all in North Carolina.

Dr. Sharon’s Ph.D. focused on measuring the outcomes of mental health recovery services; she guides the measurement of CooperRiis’ outcomes across 8 self-reporting scales while incorporating the observations of CooperRiis’ therapists about improvements in functioning and reductions in symptoms.
