CooperRiis' $2 Million Capital Campaign

Upon completing an initial $10M capital campaign, CooperRiis opened its doors debt-free in June 2003. Since then residents have come to us from 32 states. Today we need to raise $2 Million in capital donations for the following reasons:

  • More residents were in financial need than we had anticipated. We had promised to serve them and increased our scholarships accordingly.
  • Because insurance companies increasingly shorten psychiatric hospital stays, our arriving residents have been sicker than we had anticipated. Fulfilling our mission, we added more professional clinicians than we had anticipated.
  • In response to our residents’ needs for longer-term community-based support for their continued recovery, we are greatly expanding our Graduate Program capacity.
  • In response to our residents’ indication that a key value of the CooperRiis program is its community environment, CooperRiis is expanding its capacity for residential staff.

Of the $2 Million we will raise, $1.7 Million will cover:

  • The purchase and renovation of two homes for 10 CooperRiis graduates in Mill Spring and Tryon.
  • The construction of a new staff house and apartment on CooperRiis property and the purchase and renovation of a staff house on adjacent property. In all, 10 residential staff are provided for with these new properties.
  • The creation of new meeting space for staff and residents on CooperRiis property and 1,200 square feet of office space for the Mill Spring/Tryon Graduate Program staff.

The remaining funds ($300,000) will cover the expanded clinical programming and growth in staffing in the graduate programs, which has been covered so far by our line of credit.

As of today, $370,575 has been raised toward the total. Only $1.63 Million to go! Don and Lisbeth Cooper have provided the lead donation of $200,000.

The CooperRiis Scholarship and Excellence Fund
(Endowment Fund)

The CooperRiis Scholarship and Excellence Fund has been initiated to fulfill three commitments for the long term:

  • CooperRiis strives to provide scholarships so that all residents, regardless of ability to pay, will be served.
  • The CooperRiis program will continue to strive toward greater and greater excellence, rising to the challenge of providing the best possible recovery and care for our residents
  • The CooperRiis Campus and Graduate Programs will be maintained at a level that always helps our residents to feel special.
  • The CooperRiis Endowment Fund is currently $5 million and it is hoped that it will double or triple in size over the next few years.

The CooperRiis Annual Fund

CooperRiis is committed to offer all resident’s parents, spouses or guardians the opportunity for scholarship assistance after two months of meeting our full program fees.

We are also committed to program excellence, which means that we are a learning organization that often adds new features to help us meet our mission.

These commitments require that we raise about 10% of our annual budget through donations, or about $400,000 a year.

We heartily welcome and appreciate all gifts, including those who wish to donate annually, to pledge multi-year capital gifts, to make planned gifts through their wills or by establishing charitable remainder or lead trusts.

Please contact CooperRiis or Don Cooper to learn more about our fund-raising campaigns. Our staff welcomes the opportunity to schedule a presentation to your friends, family, organization or house of worship.
